Sylvania H44GS-100 Mercury Reflector

Mercury reflector lamps are required for a number of specialised applications in reflector formats, and in the North American market they continue to find a home in general lighting. The blue-green light from this lamp is found to be especially useful for the spotlighting of shrubs and trees to accentuate their natural colours.

Most commonly however, this lamp is employed as a blacklight source in conjunction with a separate filter of Woods Glass, a black coloured glass heavily doped with nickel oxide. This filters out almost all visible wavelengths but transmits the blue and UV-A lines at 320nm and 400nm. Shorter wavelengths than this are not transmitted by the borosilicate bulb of the lamp itself.

Blacklight lamps have a very broad range of applications, nearly all of which involve its employment to stimulate fluorescence. Some of these include mineralogy, the discovery of forged documents and bank notes, analysis of materials for example to aid in crack detection, identification of materials which have been marked with UV-fluorescing ink, observation of UV markings on stamps and posted letters, or the detection of invisible stains on fabrics for forensic purposes. The narrow beam angle of just 8 degrees from this lamp also makes it of importance as a blacklight source for decorative and theatrical applications.

Technically, the lamp itself consists of a standard 100W mercury arc tube, sealed into a PAR38 reflector with smooth aluminised surface. The reflector is sealed and filled with an inert nitrogen atmosphere. and the rear of the lamp is sprayed black to prevent UV escape out the back.
